Essential Checklist: What to Pack for Your Baby's Infant Care Centre

If you're gearing up to send your baby to an Infant Care Centre, this post could be incredibly useful for you. Here, I'll outline all the essentials required when sending my baby to an IFC. However, it's important to note that different IFCs may have varying requirements for what to bring. The items listed here should be viewed as a helpful reference. It's recommended to obtain a comprehensive list of items to be brought to the IFC directly from the enrolled centre.

Daily

Milk Bottle

Each day, I pack one Philip Avent 330ml PPSU milk bottle for my baby's IFC. The teachers there ensure proper sterilisation using the boiling method, making one milk bottle perfectly adequate throughout the day.

Breastmilk / Formula

From what I've noticed, my baby typically receives 3 feedings while at IFC. To ensure they're well-nourished throughout the day, I make it a priority to pack an ample supply of either breastmilk or formula milk. If you're interested, I've shared my experiences and reviews on various formula milk brands at
[Part 1] Newborn Essentials Checklist, which might be helpful for other parents navigating their options.

Diaper

We were told to pack six diapers per day for IFC. However, from my observations, it seems that the baby typically goes through a maximum of 4 diapers during the time there. If you're interested, you may read my thoughts on different diaper brands at [Part 1] Newborn Essentials Checklist

Clothes

Each day, we prepare two sets of clothes for our baby's time at IFC. One set typically consists of a romper paired with long pants, while the other set comprises a sleepsuit. The romper and long pants are usually worn during the day under the teacher's care, but upon picking up my baby from IFC, I'll opt to remove the long pants to ensure the baby stays comfortable and cool, given the warmer temperatures.

Wet Bag

The wet bag serves as a crucial item for our baby's essentials at IFC because teacher uses it to store the daily changed clothes. In instances where clothes become soiled, teacher will wash it and then places it in a separate plastic bag before returning to us.

Diaper Bag

I absolutely adore my Jujube Zealous backpack for our outings—it's a real game-changer. With its abundance of compartments and pockets, I can effortlessly organise everything we need for the baby's day out. Its spacious design accommodates all essentials comfortably.

For the baby's daily needs at IFC, I rely on a Baby Diaper Caddy Bag. Its convenience is unmatched; packing and unpacking items is a breeze, thanks to its user-friendly design. What I appreciate most is its ability to offer a quick visual check—ensuring nothing gets left behind. Plus, the caddy bag I've chosen features removable separators, allowing me to customise compartment sizes as needed. It's the perfect blend of practicality and versatility.

Towel

Discovering bamboo towels has been a game-changer for me. While I've always been content with 100% cotton towels, switching to bamboo has been a revelation. The softness and gentleness it offers on baby's skin are unmatched, creating a truly luxurious experience. Plus, its exceptional absorbency effortlessly wicks away moisture, leaving baby feeling fresh and comfortable. It's safe to say, I'm completely smitten with bamboo towels now.

Weekly

Blanket

Choosing the right blanket for your baby at IFC can depend on various factors such as their outfit and air conditioning usage. If the outfit is lighter or if the air conditioning is set to a cooler temperature, opting for a thicker blanket might be preferable to ensure warmth and comfort. However, if the outfit is warmer or if the environment tends to be on the warmer side, a thinner blanket might be more suitable. Additionally, some towels can serve as versatile substitutes for blankets, offering both absorbency and warmth when needed. For our baby at IFC, we typically provide a cotton blanket to ensure coziness, especially during nap times or cooler moments.

At home, we've established a routine where our baby sleeps comfortably in a sleeping bag since birth, and it's been a game-changer for ensuring peaceful nights. I've always felt a sense of security using a sleeping bag, particularly during the newborn stage when she slept in her own room. The reduced risk of suffocation hazards provided additional peace of mind, allowing both baby and parents to rest soundly through the night.

Mattress Cover

I recommend reaching out to the staff at IFC to confirm the appropriate size for the mattress cover. Based on their recommendation, I purchased mine from Kiddy Palace, ensuring it met their standards and specifications. This proactive approach ensures that the baby's sleeping environment at IFC remains safe, clean, and comfortable.

On-Demand

Wet Wipes

Typically, at IFC, a single packet of wet wipes lasts for approximately 3 to 4 weeks. Feel free to check out
[Part 1] Newborn Essentials Checklist for insights and recommendations based on my personal experiences with several wet wipe brands.

Hair & Body Shampoo

A single bottle of baby hair and body shampoo tends to last quite a while, offering excellent value for money. For detailed reviews on various baby hair and body shampoos, check out [Part 1] Newborn Essentials Checklist.

Diaper Cream

My baby has been using Mustela Diaper Cream since birth. It glides easily on the skin and there have been no issues so far using it.

Face Moisturiser

Since my little one began experiencing skin rashes, I've been diligently using a moisturiser tailored to her delicate complexion. If you're interested, feel free to explore reviews at [Part 1] Newborn Essentials Checklist to discover various options for baby moisturising lotions.

Body Lotion

Among the plethora of 2-in-1 moisturising solutions available for babies' face and body, Cetaphil Daily Lotion stands out as a personal favourite of mine. If you're keen on exploring further reviews, you can find them at [Part 1] Newborn Essentials Checklist.

If Required

Water Bottle

As your baby grows older, introducing a water bottle can be a convenient way to encourage independent hydration. Personally, I found the Richell Straw Training Mug to be quite effective in teaching my little one to drink from a straw. Once she mastered this skill, transitioning to a water bottle became seamless. Additionally, I've asked teacher at IFC that if I don't provide a water bottle, they will offer water in a cup instead.

Mosquito Repellent

It's concerning to hear about the mosquito infestation at the school compound recently. Waiting for the National Environment Agency (NEA) to identify and address the breeding spots can indeed take time. In the meantime, it's important to take measures to protect my baby from mosquito bites. Preparing mosquito repellent for my baby is a proactive step to ensure her safety and comfort during this period.

The MyLO Mosquito Repellent Patch is my favourite! Its convenience and long-lasting scent make it a practical solution for keeping my baby protected from mosquitoes throughout the day. Plus, its strong adhesive ensures it stays securely attached to clothing, providing peace of mind for you as a parent.

Sending My Baby to Infant Care Centre (IFC)

I've enrolled my baby in an Infant Care Centre (IFC) since she was almost 4 months old. As someone who grew up in another country, I am completely new to the process of registering my baby for an infant care centre in Singapore. With this in mind, I'm crafting a blog post to share my experiences and insights, hoping it will be useful to others facing similar circumstances.

Steps

1) Download LifeSG app

Preschool search function on the ECDA Preschool Search Portal (PSP) had ceased from 15 Jan 2024. Moving forward, to search for preschools, you need to use the LifeSG mobile app.

2) Preschool Search

It's advisable to begin shortlisting your favourite centres at least 4 months in advance. I registered my interest with the Infant Care Centre (IFC) of my choice during my third trimester, preparing for my baby's enrolment when she is 4 months old. Despite registering interest with 8 centres many months in advance, only 2 centres have responded with available slots. The competition for enrolment is evidently very high.

Navigate to the "Education and Learning" page within the LifeSG app to begin your search for preschools. Embark on your journey to find the perfect preschool for your baby by initiating your search and creating a shortlist of your favourites. At this stage, streamline your options by factoring in proximity to your location, school fees, and the programs offered, such as full-day or half-day infant care.

3) Indicate Interest [Ceased from 1 Apr 2024]

Bookmark the centres you're interested in and proceed to indicate your interest.

Note:
Starting from 1 April 2024, there will no longer be a need for the additional step of registering your interest via the LifeSG app. Instead, you can directly contact preschools for enrollment once you've identified suitable options.

4) Request for Centre Visit

Take a proactive approach by contacting centres of your choice and requesting a centre visit. However, please note that some centres, like My First Skool, may not allow centre visits. During your centre visit, it's essential to ask pertinent questions to gather information and ensure that the centre meets your expectations. Here are some sample questions you can refer to:

    - What is the staff-to-child ratio in the classrooms?
    - How many infants are currently enrolled in the centre?
    - What is the maximum number of infants you can accommodate at the facility?
    - What is the menu like?
    - What is the late pick up charges?
    - Is there a separate area designated for infants, or are they integrated with older children in the childcare facility?
    - What items should be packed for my baby's daily needs at the childcare centre?
    - What is the curriculum or approach followed for child development?
    - How are children's progress and development tracked and communicated to parents?
    - How does the centre communicate with parents and how frequently do they provide updates on the children’s progress?
    - What are the centre's policies on discipline and behavior management?
    - How does the centre handle emergencies or medical situations?
    - How, and how often, do you sanitise the toys and materials used by the children?

5) Enrolment

Complete and submit the childcare enrolment form and subsidy application form (for SG citizen child enrolled in an ECDA-licensed centre) to your chosen centre. Confirm with the centre whether they will submit the subsidy application on your behalf or if you are required to submit it yourself. You can specify the account from which the school fees will be deducted, including your child's CDA account.

Pros & Cons

Let's examine the advantages and disadvantages of sending your baby to an infant care centre.

Pros

More activities are planned out for babies/children, resulting in increased exposure to various skills that contribute to their developmental milestones
Early exposure to people can lead to reduced separation anxiety later on
Your baby will have the opportunity to interact with other babies and caregivers, promoting social skills and emotional development
    - Professional care provided compared to assistance from a helper or family members
    - Infant care centres often follow structured routines, including feeding, napping, and playtime, which can help establish healthy habits and routines for your baby
    - Infant care centres typically operate during standard working hours, making it convenient for working parents to drop off and pick up their babies

Cons

    - Infant care centres can be expensive, adding a significant financial burden to your household expenses
    - With multiple babies to care for, caregivers may have less time to devote individual attention to each child.
    - Babies in group care settings are more likely to be exposed to common illnesses like colds and stomach bugs, which can result in frequent illnesses

Overall, the decision to send your baby to an infant care center depends on your individual circumstances, preferences, and priorities. It's essential to weigh the pros and cons carefully and consider what will best meet the needs of both you and your baby.

Review for Carpe Diem @The Stradia

Pros

The teachers at Carpe Diem @The Stradia are friendly and responsive. They readily follow instructions regarding baby care, such as applying moisturiser frequently for drool rash. They provide regular updates through their in-house app on activities like baby showers, diaper changes, feeding (breastmilk, formula milk, or solid), and naps. Additionally, the presence of multiracial teachers allows babies to be exposed to different races. Furthermore, their fees are comparable to Sparkletots and My First Skool, placing them in the average price range.

Cons

I've found their in-house app to be very buggy and not user-friendly. At one point, I decided to stop packing baby food for my infant care centre when my baby started on solid foods, as it seemed redundant to continue preparing food myself. I sent a message to the teachers via the in-app messaging function, informing them that they could feed my baby from the centre's infant menu. However, it appears that my message got lost among the others, as three different teachers asked me if they could feed my baby from their infant menu since I hadn't packed her food.

Treating Runny or Blocked Nose in Babies

Since my baby began attending infant care centre at 3+ months old, she's been experiencing more frequent bouts of flu and cough. There was a time when her nose was blocked, making her quite cranky, especially during feeding. It's disheartening to witness her struggle to sleep well due to her congested nose. Thankfully, she bounced back within just 2 days and resumed her regular feeding routine.

1. Clear Nasal Congestion

I use Sterimar Nasal Hygiene Easy Breathe Easy with Chiboji Nasal Aspirator to gently remove mucus. On regular days, I typically clean my baby's nose once a day. However, on days when my baby experiences a runny or blocked nose, I'll attend to her nose more frequently. When compared to other nasal aspirators I've tested, such as Haakaa Nasal Aspirator and Rechargeable Baby Nasal Aspirator, the Chiboji Nasal Aspirator proves to be the most effective in removing thick and sticky mucus. I highly recommend every household with babies to have this magic tool.

An important point to remember is to follow the cleaning instruction properly! Regrettably, other family members inadvertently placed the nasal bottle in my steam + dry steriliser, resulting in considerable difficulty when opening and closing the bottle. In the end, I had to acquire a new nose bottle.

2. Take Short & Warm Bath

While it may sound cliché, it's important to keep your baby's bath time short and warm. Avoid lingering or singing during bath time. Additionally, ensure the changing room is comfortably warm for your baby. Switch off the air conditioning system 30 minutes before your baby's bath time.

3. Apply Garlic Balm

This Garlic Balm is a natural remedy made by infusing garlic cloves in olive oil and beewax. This infusion process allows the beneficial properties of garlic, such as its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory qualities, to transfer into the oil. The resulting balm is often used topically for various purposes, including to alleviate cough, flu, phlegm, runny nose, blocked nose, and helps strengthening kids immunity. It's essential to be cautious when using garlic balm, especially on sensitive skin, and it's advisable to perform a patch test before widespread use to ensure no adverse reactions occur. When my baby experiences a runny or blocked nose, I apply garlic balm to her chest, forehead, and nose bridge once in the morning and once before bedtime.

4. Ease Bedtime Discomfort

If your baby needs to sleep in an air-conditioned room, consider leaving a small gap in the door to regulate the room temperature. Ensure your baby stays warm by dressing them in long sleeves, pants, and covering them with a blanket. If your baby experiences a congested nose, elevating their head with Flat Head Prevention Pillow while sleeping can help alleviate nighttime nasal congestion.

5. Use Nasal Decongestant Drops for Severe Blocked Nose

When my 4 month old suffered from severe nasal congestion, she had a distressing, sleepless night, struggling to breathe comfortably. The doctor at the polyclinic prescribed Illiadin, advising 1 drop per nostril twice a day. However, I opted to use it only once on my baby, as I prefer natural remedies for her blocked nose. It's crucial to follow the prescribed usage of Illiadin or any nasal decongestant for a limited duration to prevent 'rebound congestion,' where prolonged use can worsen nasal blockage after the effects wear off. Consulting a healthcare professional, especially when using such medications for infants or young children, is advisable.

6. Consult a PD

If your baby has flu symptoms, especially if they're under 3 months old, has a high fever, is struggling to breathe, or if you're concerned, seek medical advice promptly.

Little Ones Sleep Program Review

During my confinement period, my incredible nanny tended to my baby with such care and dedication. Every two hours, she nourished my little one, ensured my meals were taken care of, and maintained my baby's cleanliness. It was a blessing—I found myself solely focused on providing milk for my baby while everything else was expertly managed. Once our nanny departed, the weight of responsibility fell squarely on our shoulders. Those initial weeks were a whirlwind of sleepless nights, feeling drained and mentally exhausted despite our shared efforts in caring for our precious child. I marvelled at how the nanny managed it all. Despite not being young, she navigated the relentless cycle with grace. It led us to consider hiring a nanny or finding a helper, knowing deep down it wasn't a sustainable solution. It was during this time that a friend of my husband's, aware of our struggles, suggested the Little Ones Sleep Program as a potential remedy.

What do you get in Little Ones Sleep Program?

This is a program comprising tailored sleeping and feeding schedules crafted for specific age ranges. It's a comprehensive guide that outlines optimal times for naps and feeding. Furthermore, it offers invaluable advice on age-appropriate methods for calming and fostering self-soothing in babies, empowering parents with effective techniques to encourage better sleep patterns for their little ones.

Review

I enrolled in their Newborn Sleep Program (0 - 3 months) when my baby reached 2 months old. The program is impressively thorough, offering a comprehensive guide for nurturing a baby's sleep patterns. Admittedly, adhering precisely to their prescribed schedule proved challenging. Nevertheless, the program thoughtfully includes steps for moments when it's not feasible to follow the schedule precisely. It advises on how to compensate for any missed timings, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of caring for an infant.

Some parents might feel unsettled by aspects of the program, particularly the inclusion of waking the baby at specified times and imposing a set of schedule for baby's feeding. However, the program's approach varies and depends on individual comfort levels. Parents should decide how strictly they want to adhere to the suggested routine. What works best may differ from family to family.

Key Learning

Overall, I've found that it significantly assists in establishing a routine for our baby. I firmly believe that effective sleep training largely centers around establishing a consistent schedule for your baby. Ensuring longer wake times during the day contributes to extended periods of sleep at night. Creating the appropriate environment is key: dimming lights and speaking softly during nighttime. Additionally, gradually extending intervals between your baby's feeding times also helps in this process.

Outcome

Between 4 and 5 months old, my baby typically needs 3 feedings from 8:00 PM until 7:30 AM the following day, gradually decreasing to 2 feedings during this time.

By 4 months old:

    - Feed #1 takes place between 8.00 PM - 10.00 PM
    - Feed #2 takes place between 12.00 AM - 2.00 AM
    - Feed #3 takes place between 4.00 AM - 6.00 AM

By 5 months old:

    - Feed #1 takes place between 11.30 PM - 1.30 AM
    - Feed #2 takes place between 5.30 AM - 7.00 AM

By 6 months old:

    - My baby sleeps through the night from 8 pm until 6:30 am the following day.

Tingkat Meal Review

Since the arrival of my bundle of joy, dedicating time to myself, let alone cooking, has become quite challenging. The daily dilemma of deciding on dinner has been a constant headache. Consequently, I've ventured into exploring various tingkat meal services to ease this burden.

1) Kim Paradise / Neo Garden / Best Catering

 Meal Plan  20 days (5 days/week)
 Meal Type  3 dishes + 1 soup
Meal Plan Cost (1 pax)  $248.40 (Inc. GST)
Price per meal per pax  $12.42 (Inc. GST)

Verdict: ❤️🖤🖤🖤🖤

In August 2023, I eagerly subscribed to their tingkat meal service, opting for both lunch and dinner. To my surprise, I discovered that both meal plans were provided by the same parent company, offering identical dishes for lunch and dinner. Hence, subscribing to both plans turned out to be redundant. 😅 It's worth noting that they do not include pork in their menu offerings.

During my trial of their East menu for a span of 20 days, I found the meals to be a healthier choice. They leaned towards being less salty, less oily, and devoid of added MSG, primarily using 100% vegetable oil. However, this healthier approach led to the meals being somewhat bland. Unfortunately, a notable downside was their tendency to overcook vegetable dishes, resulting in an unappealing appearance. Perhaps the reason for the overcooked vegetables could be attributed to the method of packing hot dishes into the containers. This could potentially cause the vegetables to continue cooking within the container, resulting in an overcooked state.

2) Relacto

 Meal Plan Trial Single Dinner
 Meal Type 8 dishes + 1 soup + 1 dessert + 1 lactation drink
Meal Plan Cost (2 pax) $35 (Inc. GST)
Price per meal per pax $17.50 (Inc. GST)

Verdict: ❤️❤️🖤🖤🖤

Despite the anticipation spurred by the price I paid, the quality of the cuisine has left me somewhat underwhelmed. The Black Pepper Wagyu Beef, though promising, fell short due to its excessive saltiness, while the Mint and Lemon Marinated Alaskan Cod lacked the expected flavour profile, appearing rather bland. Additionally, the Osmanthus Coral Seaweed with Chia Seed was a disappointment, resembling more of a sugary solution than a nuanced dessert offering. None of the dishes exhibited an exceptional taste that justified the value of the investment made. Unsurprisingly, none emerged as my personal favourite.

Opted for a meal designed to support lactation, I wonder if the inclusion of lactogenic ingredients might have inadvertently contributed to the overall subdued and unremarkable taste of the dishes. It's disheartening to find that none of the delicacies stood out as a memorable or worthwhile culinary experience, especially given the expectations associated with the price point.

3) Tingkat Delivery by Richfood

Meal Plan 5 Days Trial Meal
 Meal Type 4 dishes
Meal Plan Cost (2 pax) $129.60 (Inc. GST)
Price per meal per pax $12.96 (Inc. GST)

Verdict: ❤️❤️🖤🖤🖤

The cuisine provided is reasonably satisfactory. Having sampled it for 5 days, I've observed that the dishes bear a striking resemblance to the offerings commonly found at local "cai fan" stalls. While the food is palatable, it doesn't boast any extraordinary flavours, presenting a rather ordinary taste profile. The portion sizes are adequate, striking a good balance.

Notably, these meals exhibit a commendable quality in that they are notably less salty and oily in comparison to the typical "cai fan" available in my neighbourhood. However, considering the comparable quality to local options, I find the pricing to be relatively high for what essentially mirrors the standard "cai fan" food.

4) Mom's Cooking

 Meal Plan 5 days
 Meal Type 3 dishes + 1 soup
Meal Plan Cost (2 pax) $148.50 (Inc. GST)
Price per meal per pax $14.85 (Inc. GST)

Verdict: ❤️❤️❤️❤️🖤

The culinary experience offered is a symphony of flavours, evoking the comforting essence of homemade cooking. Each day's menu presents a delightful array of dishes, with particular standouts like the aromatic curry chicken with potatoes, the tantalising stir-fried ladyfingers complemented by sambal dry shrimp, the impeccably steamed fish featuring Nyonya asam sauce, and the indulgent Indonesian-style curry prawn.

Each day holds a treasure of at least one dish that resonates with my palate. Regrettably, the soups offered fall short of expectations, lacking the robustness and depth of flavour found in the other offerings. Additionally, the deep-fried pork chop with Maggie soya sauce disappoints, overwhelmed by an excessive saltiness that masks its potential flavours. If you're a fan of spice or crave the numbing sensation of mala, their tingkat meal is a must-try. Though, I must admit, their mala and curry dishes tend to be a tad heavy on the oil.

If I were to engage with their meal plan anew, I would opt for either the 3 or 4 dish selections, foregoing the soup entirely. In essence, while the majority of the menu excels in delivering a satisfying home-cooked experience bursting with diverse and enticing flavours, certain areas such as the soups and the overpowering saltiness of the pork chop with Maggie soya sauce leave room for improvement.

5) Fatty Daddy Fatty Mummy

 Meal Plan 5 days
 Meal Type 3 dishes + 1 soup
Meal Plan Cost (2 pax) $170.64 (Inc. GST)
Price per meal per pax $17.06 (Inc. GST)

Verdict: ❤️❤️❤️🖤🖤

I've opted to explore their endorsed healthier meal plan, and it notably boasts reduced oil and salt content. Comparing it to Mom's Cooking, their soup stands out for its superior taste. However, their three main dishes don't quite match up. If you're seeking a health-conscious tingkat meal option where cost isn't a constraint, then their tingkat plan might suit your needs.

6) Ronnie Kitchen

 Meal Plan 5 days trial
 Meal Type 3 dishes + 1 soup
Meal Plan Cost (2 pax) 92.65 (Inc. GST)
Price per meal per pax $9.27 (Inc. GST)

Verdict: ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Among all the tingkat meals I've sampled, this one truly resonates with my taste buds. The vegetable dishes maintain a perfect balance, never overcooked, while the soups are simply delectable. Overall, their offerings boast a refreshing simplicity and are notably lighter on the oil. What's more, the variety of dishes is impressive. Unlike with other tingkat meals, I don't experience any sense of culinary fatigue after a few days; this one keeps me eagerly anticipating each meal.

How to Get Rid of Cradle Cap?

My baby had cradle cap on her scalp and eyebrow when she was about 2 months old. Cradle cap is the infant form of dandruff which causes rough, scaly patches on baby's skin. Cradle cap is a type of seborrheic dermatitis found on baby's head. It is a common condition that affects approximately 70% of 3 months old  babies. It is rarely itchy or uncomfortable and it is not contagious.

Treatment

1) Moisturise and gently massage affected areas

Sebclair Cream was prescribed by my PD and I apply twice a day with gentle massages on my baby's scalp and eyebrow. I'll apply once after morning wipe and once after shower in the late afternoon. You can continue using this cream even after your baby's cradle cap has resolved and it can be used on other body parts too (eg. face).

Source: Instagram

On top of that, I also apply Mustela Cradle Cap Cream daily on my baby's scalp and eyebrow before her sleep time. The texture is a bit watery, so be careful when you press the tube to prevent over-squeezing it.

Source: Shopee

Alternatively, you can massage Tropicana Virgin Coconut Oil for Baby into affected areas and leave it on for 10 - 15 mins before baby's bath. I can see improvement on my baby's scalp and eyebrow within a day or two. However, I dislike using it because it literally makes everything oily and I personally dislike the strong coconut smell on my baby. If you don't mind it, then you may give it a try.

2) Use the right shampoo and gently massage when shampooing

I was using the usual head-to-toe baby shampoo and my baby's condition didn't improve. Hence, I have decided to try Mustela Foam Shampoo specifically for cradle cap. I love this shampoo because it lathers well which makes it easy to massage my baby's scalp. It has no fragrance and uses tear-free formula.

3) Use baby hair brush

I use Dr. Brown's Brush + Comb to brush my baby's hair. It effectively removes the cradle cap flakes and its soft soothing bristles makes it suitable for baby head massage. Remember to NOT forcefully peel the flakes as it may bleed.

Depending on the severity of your baby's condition, your baby may require a longer recovery period. Be patient and don't be too hard on yourself. Always consult your PD when you're in doubt.

Monitoring

1) CCTV

I have a TP-Link Tapo C210 CCTV in the living room and it oversees both the living room and kitchen. The video quality is not the best but sufficient to let me know what my baby is doing in the living room. Furthermore, I have a TP-Link Tapo C110 mounted on my baby's cot.

TP-Link Tapo C210 TP-Link Tapo C110
 👍
 - Receive notification when motion detection.
 - Receive notification when person detection
 - Receive notification when baby crying detection
 - Has privacy mode
 - Support night vision
 - Support video recording
 - Support snapshot
 - Support sending of voice messages and voice call
 - Support multiple user access

 👎
 - Video and sound has slight delay
 👍
 - When motion is detected, the camera will continue tracking the activity until it has stopped

 👎
 - Lower video resolution

 - No motion tracking

Another CCTV with good reviews that you may want to consider is Xiaomi Mijia CCTV.

2) Baby Monitor

I am using an iPad Pro to monitor my CCTV throughout the night while turning on the low battery mode. The battery can last up to 14 - 16 hours without charging. I don't think this should be a long term solution because it may damage the battery and there may be unexpected side effects for sleeping near a radiation emitting device in the long run.

Another alternative is to use a baby monitor but the downsides are that the video resolution may not be as good as CCTV and the monitor screen may be small depending on the baby monitor you're using.

Cleaning

1) Detergent & Softener

This detergent has no fragrance which makes my baby's clothes having milky smell even after wash. It is also unable to remove stubborn poo stain effectively. Despite the drawbacks, I continued to use this detergent throughout my baby's newborn stage as it is gentle for baby's skin.

It is reasonably priced and has fragrance that leaves subtle scent on baby's clothes after wash. Stubborn poo stain cannot be removed completely with this detergent. For baby's poo stain, I'll use adult detergent to hand-wash it first.

2) Bottle Cleanser

My mom and confinement nanny commented that it doesn't lather. Hence, they often put in more cleanser to ensure bottles and breast pump parts are clean.

This is an economical option for baby bottle cleanser. The bottle dispenses foam cleanser easily and it lathers well with bottle brush/sponge.

I've discovered another cost-effective option for baby bottle cleanser. This product comes in a bottle that dispenses foam cleanser effortlessly, and it lathers excellently with a bottle brush or sponge. My husband particularly favours this cleanser because it effectively removes any oiliness from breastmilk on all our baby feeding equipments.

3) Bottle Brush / Sponge

Bear in mind that it is important to change bottle brush regularly especially the sponge ones to prevent contamination on baby feeding equipments.

Personally I love using this sponge brush as the sponge can easily fit into flange insert and bottle teat.

This brush is suitable for cleaning bottle/cup. It can't reach corners, sharp edges, and small holes.

Able to clean bottle and teat thoroughly. It is not suitable for bottle liquid cleanser that doesn't lather. You'll need to dismantle the handle every time you want to clean the bottle teat.

This tiny brush will come in handy when you need to clean small items such as nasal aspirator parts.

4) Toy Disinfectant Spray

You'll constantly need to keep baby's play area clean, so make sure you stock up a few bottles.

5) Hand Sanitiser

Sanitise your hands before feeding your baby.

6) Food Grade Disinfectant Wipes

Useful to wipe any surfaces that comes in contact with baby's mouth especially when you're outdoor.

Clothing

1) Onesies/Rompers

Singapore weather is hot and humid all year long. Make sure the fabric of your baby's clothes are breathable and cool.

2) Sleepwear

If your baby is sleeping in an air-con room, then ensure that they are wearing suitable sleepwear to keep them warm.

3) Mittens

To prevent baby scratches themselves. According to theAsianParent online article, it is recommended to not let babies wear mittens longer than 2 weeks to prevent motor and sensory development hindrance.

4) Baby Hat

The only time my newborn wears a hat is when we're being discharged from TMC. 😅

5) Towel

I love using bamboo hooded towel because it's soft and has good absorbency.

6) Washcloth

I wipe my baby in the morning and shower her in the evening, so I need plenty of washcloths. On top of that, muslin washcloth can be used as handkerchief and burp cloth too.

Play

1) Gym Mat

I love Vtech 7-in-1 Grow with Baby Sensory Gym because it is a newborn-to-toddler gym. My baby spent most of her wake time playing at this gym mat and I often sing along with the music.

2) Play Mat

I bought Parklon LaPure Soft Mat after being recommended by my husband's relative in which their Parklon play mat is still in excellent condition even after a decade. If you're looking for a good quality play mat and you have the budget, it would be worthwhile to invest in Parklon LaPure Soft Mat.

3) High Contrast Books

I spent time reading high contrast books to my baby and often tell stories based on the images on the book.

4) Rattles

Let your baby play with different rattles to encourage hands and fingers sensory development.

5) Rocker Chair

My baby loves sitting on the rocker while I read to my baby. She sometimes fall asleep on the rocker too, after which I'll move her to her cot.

As my baby grow older, she likes to be rocked sideways to sleep. Hence, it might be a good investment to buy an auto-swing electric baby rocker.

Travel

1) Portable Cot

You might want to consider getting a portable baby cot if you're planning to go to your in law's place periodically.

2) Car Seat

Travelling in personal car and private hire car such as Grab and Gojek requires baby car seat. Baby car seat is not required for taxi like ComforDelGro.

If you're looking for a 2-in-1 car seat + stroller, you may consider getting Doona+ Infant Car Seat Stroller. It is multifunctional and convenient if you travel often by car. My husband's relative had given us their Doona stroller without the infant seat insert. As a result, I've observed that my baby being uncomfortable sitting in the stroller. It is easy to manoeuvre but it can get quite bumpy on uneven pathway. Furthermore, it doesn't include free accessories such as stroller storage bag, rain cover, sunshade extension and mosquito net.

In short, I'd say that Doona+ Infant Car Seat Stroller is suitable for families with car or travel by car often.

If your family own a car, Graco 4ever DLX 4-in-1 Convertible Car Seat might be a good option for you. It is suitable from newborn up to 8 years old.

If you're looking for a portable car seat, Urban Kanga Travel Car Seat could be ideal for you. However, it is only suitable for babies from 9 months old to 4 years old. It is foldable and super light at 3kg, making it convenient to be brought for travelling.

3) Stroller

After much consideration, I have decided to get a new stroller as Doona+ Infant Car Seat Stroller isn't meeting my needs. I've done multiple comparison and finally ended up purchasing Keenz Air Plus 3.0.

What I like about Keenz Air Plus 3.0:
✅ Large storage basket
✅ Light (6.8kg)
✅ Cabin size
✅ Suitable from newborn to 30kg

4) Baby Carrier

One disadvantage of bringing a stroller out is that you often need to look for an elevator to travel up or down within a building. Alternatively, you may carry your baby in a baby carrier. Ergobaby is one of the well known baby carrier brand in the market. Ergobaby Omni Breeze Baby Carrier is recommended for 0 - 48 months old babies. Moreover, it allows you to carry your baby in 4 different positions: front carry inward facing, front carry outward facing, back carry, and hip carry.

Another popular baby carrier you may want to consider is Konny Baby. Konny Baby Carrier FLEX AirMesh with Head Support comes in a compact size which makes it portable and easy to be carried around. With a few practices, you can easily wear it in 10 seconds and adjust the carrier even while holding a baby.

5) Diaper Bag

I have a Large Stroller Caddy Bag used to pack my baby's daily essentials at infant care centre. It fit nicely under my Keenz Air Plus 3.0 stroller basket. I also have a diaper backpack that I use while going out. Skip Hop Forma Backpack is one of the best-selling backpack in the market.

6) Portable Milk Warmer

A portable milk warmer will be useful for traveling if you bottle feed your baby. You may want to check out Intuitno Portable Bottle Warmer. It is very light (305g) and able to warm room temperature milk to 40 degrees celcius within 2 mins.

For a more budget-friendly option, consider the Supermama Portable Milk Warmer. It becomes even more economical if purchased from Malaysia. This handy device efficiently warms up 170ml of chilled breastmilk from 18°C to 45°C in just 5 minutes.

I usually feed my baby with formula milk when we're out. So, all I need to bring is a milk bottle, formula milk, and Skip Hop Insulated Kid Food Jar filled with warm water.

7) Milk Cooler Bag

It is crucial to keep your breastmilk cold when you're bringing home your expressed breastmilk from workplace or when you're going out for an extended period of time.

If you don't mind splurging, Ceres Chill 180ml - 480ml / 360ml - 1050ml could be your ultimate solution. It is travel-friendly, has large capacity and able to chill breastmilk for 20+ hours. It can be used as chiller or warmer making it functional even when you've stopped pumping.

A more affordable alternative would be using PackIt Freezable Lunch Bag. All you need to do is fold, freeze, pack and go. To achieve optimal cooling power, freeze PackIt bag for 12 - 14 hours. It can chill food or drink for hours depending on the external temperatures. Usually I throw in a couple of ice packs to further extend the cooling power.

8) Insect Repellent

As baby skin is very delicate and sensitive, they may require a longer recovery period from an insect bite compared to adults. Hence, prevention is better than cure. Oh, and on a side note, some baby oil may contain insect repellent ingredients too.

I've found the MyLO Mosquito Repellent Patch to be highly effective in preventing mosquitoes from biting my baby. It's incredibly easy to use, and the scent lasts throughout the day.

9) Stroller Fan

I always clip a Mini 10000mAh Chargeable Fan on the stroller to ensure my baby remain cool while we're out.

10) Stroller Rain Cover

Never go out without stroller rain cover! If your stroller doesn't come with a free rain cover, then you can get a universal stroller rain cover like below.

11) Stroller Sun Shade Extension

Another must have before leaving your house is a stroller sun shade extension.

This is how it looks like on my Keenz Air Plus 3.0.

12) Stroller Mosquito Net

Honestly speaking, I've not started using stroller mosquito net so far. But since my stroller comes with a free mosquito net, I don't need to get one myself. I believe a mosquito net is necessary if you enjoy strolling in the park.

Standby Kool Fever Patch for Baby and Kool Fever Soft Cooling Gel Pillow at home in case baby is down with fever.

3) Flu/Cough Treatment

Important:

Clear your baby's mucus diligently when he/she is having flu. I have also used Garlic Balm on my baby to relieve cough, flu, phlegm, runny nose, and stuffy nose.

Others

1) Label Printer

It doesn't stick well on uneven surface. The ink will fade when it comes in contact with heat. I have labelled some of the baby products with thermal label and the ink starts to fade within 2 months even when the products are placed in an aircon room at all time.

Customised Name Stamp for Kids
It is indeed wash and water resistant. Hassle free to stamp on flat surface such as baby diaper (for IFC). However, it is notably more challenging to stamp on non-flat surface. I've tried to stamp on milk bottle but it got smudged when my hand trembles a tiny bit.

While I do find the price to be quite high, I must admit I am thoroughly satisfied with its quality. The sticker adheres well to surfaces, maintains its colour without fading, and stays securely in place.

2) Trolley

Get a trolley to easily move and access baby daily essentials anywhere in the house.

3) Air Humidifier

If your baby sleeps in an aircon room all the time, then it is better to get an air humidifier to prevent your baby's skin from getting dry.

4) Resealable Bags

You'll need a lot of ziplock bags to store your baby items especially after sterilising baby feeding equipments.

5) Container

You might want to get an airtight container to store your breast pump parts for fridge hack. Read Tips & Hacks for Breastfeeding Mummies to learn about fridge hack.

6) Wet Bag
